Boxer Rebellion: Eight-Nation Alliance
About this Committee
The Boxer Rebellion was an intense and destabilizing conflict that occurred from October 1899 to September 1901, primarily in northern and eastern China. What initially started as an anti-foreigner and anti-imperialist peasant uprising eventually escalated into a Qing dynasty-backed conflict against an alliance of several Western nations, which collectively became known as the “Eight-Nation Alliance”. The Boxer Rebellion saw numerous battles and skirmishes between hundreds of thousands of troops on each side, often utilizing weapons still used in war today, and cost an estimated 100,000 lives. The conflict ended with a victory for the Eight-Nation Alliance, and further weakened the grip of power that the Qing Dynasty had long-held over its people.
As the stronger, more advanced, and more rational committee of the Boxer Rebellion JCC, the Eight-Nation Alliance and its allies will seek to militarily, politicially, and economically dominate the Qing Dynasty and crush the pathetic rebellion instigated by the so-called “Society of Righteous and Harmonious Fists.” Delegates can expect to respond to small attacks and acts of sabotage by the Boxers in the beginning, lead large-scale battles and conquest in the middle, and, in the end, attempt to negotiate harsh and ambitious terms for ending the war with not just the Qing Dynasty and Boxers, but with each other. Neither side of this Joint Crisis Committee is limited to the actual historical outcome of the Boxer Rebellion. It is up to delegates to rewrite history just as it occurred, or veer far off the path and into chaos and fantasy.
