SOCHUM

Preventing the Recruitment and Use of Children by Non-State Armed Groups in Sub-Saharan Africa

Addressing the Displacement of Indigenous Peoples due to Climate Change

About this Committee

The Social, Humanitarian, and Cultural Committee (SOCHUM) was first established in 1948 as the Third Committee of the United Nations General Assembly, and it has served as the forum of discussion for issues such as human rights, humanitarian affairs, and social matters. At the end of World War II, SOCHUM assessed the wave of decolonization by providing newly independent countries the platform to voice their concerns and assert their rights. Throughout the years, the committee has addressed a variety of global challenges and affairs, such as the advancement of women, the protection of children, and the confrontation of contemporary issues, including mass displacement, the right of self-determination, and the protection of indigenous populations and refugees. Indeed, SOCHUM’s recommendations and draft resolutions contribute to the decision-making of the General Assembly by keeping humanitarian principles and human rights at the forefront of the United Nations and international diplomacy.
