About this Committee
The World Health Organization (WHO) was founded in 1948 as a specialized agency of the United Nations to promote global health and coordinate international responses to disease. Created in the aftermath of World War II, it reflected the belief that health is essential to peace, security, and development. WHO’s early work included smallpox eradication, establishing health regulations, and standardizing medicines, and its role has since expanded to issues like maternal health, non-communicable diseases, and mental health. Today, it continues to lead in global health governance by setting standards, supporting health systems, and fostering international cooperation.
