About this Committee
Created in 1946, the Sixth Committee known as the Legal Committee was formed in the United Nations General Assembly. The Legal Committee is responsible for creating and developing international law and its underlying code. Legal debates a large spread of legal issues such as international law and legislation, creating new legal tools, disputes between countries, application and interpretation of current international law, and rules of procedure regarding international law. Member states of the Legal Committee emphasize the important balance of national sovereignty and their commitment to upholding justice. Legal’s key principles are to clarify boundaries to prevent abuse and overlapping between governing bodies, strengthen cooperation between states in investigation of criminals, and enhance the role of judicial bodies such as the International Criminal Court. Today Legal continues to create a platform for discussion on the rapid growth of international law.
