About this Committee

Welcome to the Boxer and Qing Alliance! This committee will take place between 1899 to 1901 in China. The 19th century was a period of rapid change. At the end of the First Opium War, Western European nations forced China to open its ports with unfair provisions. Also, the Taiping rebellion resulted in 20 million lives lost, further destabilizing the Qing Dynasty. The final straw was when the Second Opium War forced China to recognize Christians as citizens. By 1899, the Society of Harmonious Fists (also known as the Boxers) stirred up a frenzy of Chinese nationalism, targeting foreigners and Christian missionaries.

The goals of this committee are to remove evangelical missions, fight the barbarians (the Eight-Nation Alliance), and uphold the glory of the Middle Kingdom. Boxers have made localized and uncoordinated attacks on Christian churches. However, the Boxer movement is not supported by the Qing Dynasty. Under the Mandate of Heaven, you must get Empress Dowager Cixi's support for the Boxer movement. The Empress will be played by the crisis backroom, and I hear that she is not easy to please. The Boxers will have an additional goal of centralizing their operations. Although the Boxers have the numbers and sophisticated training, they will need to organize attacks on the Eight Nation Alliance. We are a great nation with a Great Wall!
