COPUOS

Ensuring equitable access to outer space for all UN Member States

Addressing concerns of deployment of space based weapons platforms

About this Committee

The United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS), established by General Assembly Resolution 1472 (XIV) in 1959, was created in response to Cold War concerns over the potential militarization and exploitation of outer space. Comprising the Scientific and Technical Subcommittee and the Legal Subcommittee, COPUOS comprises numerous UN member states and international observers to ensure cooperation and develop international norms for space activity. The committee's main goal is to ensure the peaceful exploration and use of outer space, prevent a space arms race, and maintain space as the province of all humankind. However, in an era of rapid commercialization, nationalized ideals, and growing orbital congestion, COPUOS also seeks to safeguard long-term sustainability and equitable access to space and its resources for humankind.
