About this Committee
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) was established in 1972 under Resolution 2997 XXVII, with the primary purpose of observing and responding to environmental global challenges. In 2012, the UN General Assembly strengthened UNEP’s role and expanded its membership to include all 193 UN member states. Over the past five decades, UNEP has played a crucial role in preventing marine pollution, protecting endangered species, and promoting sustainable development. UNEP’s work has been critical in developing international environmental policies and supporting member states. Today, UNEP continues to strive to protect the environment through its various programs and initiatives, addressing pressing issues like climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution.
