The United Nations Sixth Committee (LEGAL) is the General Assembly’s primary forum for issues related to international law. It focuses on how legal principles are created, interpreted, and applied across the international system, including the rights and responsibilities of states and international organizations.

Its work covers areas such as treaty law, international criminal law, state responsibility, jurisdiction, terrorism, diplomatic relations, and the rule of law. The committee also reviews developments in international law and considers recommendations from bodies such as the International Law Commission.

LEGAL increasingly addresses emerging challenges, including artificial intelligence, cyber operations, environmental protection, transnational crime, and new technologies. Through this work, the Sixth Committee helps clarify legal standards, address gaps in existing frameworks, and ensure that international law continues to adapt to changing global conditions.
