The Special Political and Decolonization Committee (SPECPOL) was founded in 1990 after the combination of the Decolonization Committee and the Special Political Committee. Its main focus is on issues surrounding decolonization, including both the rights, such as self-determination, of those who live in the seventeen Non-Self-Governing territories across the world and the many modern issues stemming from the effects of colonialism. One of its most significant efforts was the “International Decade for the Eradication of Colonialism” that took place from 1990 to 2000, which intended to decrease the number of Non-Self-Governing territories. This is sought primarily through the promotion of self-determination efforts in said territories and is an effort that has been repeated three times since, in a continuing dedication to self-determination around the world. In addition to its decolonization efforts, SPECPOL is also dedicated to multiple issues involving international cooperation, including peacekeeping operations and space exploration, among others.
