Founded in 1950, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), "the UN Refugee Agency," protects individuals who have become refugees because of conflict, persecution, violence, and humanitarian crises. Though UNHCR was first formed to assist those who had been displaced from their homelands as a result of the Second World War, today, UNHCR plays a key role in assisting those who have been forcibly displaced across the globe by providing immediate assistance, advocating for refugee rights and asylum; working with other humanitarian organizations and governments in offering sustainable solutions such as voluntary repatriation, local integration, and resettlement.

As the number of forcibly displaced people continues to grow worldwide, UNHCR is vital for coordinating efforts globally. In this committee, delegates will examine how member states can cooperate to protect those who have been displaced while balancing humanitarian responsibility, national interests, and other factors that arise in crises.
