About this Committee

Established in 1945, the Disarmament and International Security Committee (DISEC) deals with issues surrounding the escalation of emerging threats, international security, and the regulation of military technologies. The First Committee of the United Nations General Assembly, serves as a central forum for all 193 UN member states to debate and resolve security issues propagating across the globe, including but not limited to: illicit arms control, cyberwarfare, militarization of space. One of the most notable successes that defines the critical role of DISEC in the General Assembly is exemplified by, January 1946’s Resolution 1 (I) calling for the “elimination from national armaments of atomic weapons and of all other major weapons adaptable to mass destruction.” As one of the six main committees of the General Assembly, DISEC plays a crucial role in setting the agenda for global disarmament efforts, often informing and supporting matters that later come before the Security Council. Building political momentum for impactful action, the Disarmament and International Security Committee continues to evolve in their approach to international security as discussions surrounding modern day issues unfold.
