About this Committee

The Commission on the Status of Women (CSW), established in 1946 as a functional body of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), is dedicated to advancing gender equality and women’s empowerment worldwide. Rooted in the UN Charter’s commitment to the equal rights of men and women, the CSW emerged at a time when women’s political participation was limited, with early priorities including political rights, marriage equality, and education. Over time, its scope has broadened to address economic empowerment, healthcare access, and women’s representation in decision-making. Meeting annually since 1987, the CSW sets thematic agendas, assembles interactive panels, and produces policy recommendations for ECOSOC. By mainstreaming gender equality into economic, social, political, and human rights issues, the commission emphasizes that human rights cannot exist without women’s rights, and continues to play a pivotal role in shaping global policies that promote equity and inclusion.
